A Robotic Wheelchair Roaming in a Railway Station

چکیده
In this paper we describe the hardware design and the control, and navigation system of our robotic wheelchair MAid (Mobility Aid for Elderly and Disabled People). Following the advice of disabled people and physicians we did not set out to re-invent and redevelop the set of standard skills of so-called intelligent wheelchairs , such as FollowWall, FollowCorridor, PassDoorway, which are commonly described in the literature. In spite of their disability handicapped people are often well capable of navigating their wheelchair along a corridor and actually eager to do it. Instead, we focused on maneuvers which are very burdensome because they take a long time and require extreme attention. One of these functions is deliberative locomotion in rapidly changing, large-scale environments, such as shopping malls or concourses of airports or railway stations, where tens or hundreds of people and objects are moving around. MAid's performance was tested in the central station of Ulm during rush-hour, and in the exhibition halls of the Hannover Messe '98, the biggest industrial fair worldwide. Meanwhile , MAid has survived more than 36 hours of testing in those environments. To our knowledge this is the rst system among robotic wheelchairs and mobile robots to have achieved a similar performance.

Navigating a Robotic Wheelchair in a Railway Station during Rush Hour
This paper describes the hardware design, control, and navigation system of and some preliminary experiments with the robotic wheelchair Mobility Aid for elderly and disabled people (MAid). MAid’s general task is to transport people with severely impaired motion skills. The authors did not set out to reinvent and redevelop the set of standard skills of so-called intelligent wheelchairs, such as...
متن کاملMotion coordination between a human and a robotic wheelchair
In this paper we describe an approach to coordinating the motion of a human with a mobile robot moving in a populated, continuously changing, natural environment. Our test application is a wheelchair accompanying a person through the concourse of a railway station moving side by side with the person. In healthcare and rehabilitation scenarios this addresses a rather important issue. Pushing and...
متن کاملWheelchair stabilization by the control of a spatial 3-RRS mechanism
A spatial parallel mechanism namely 3-RRS mechanism has been assigned to be attached to the seat of a standard electric wheelchair to prevent the turning over of the handicapped sitting on the wheelchair. The system of the wheelchair and the mechanism is a self-balancing robotic wheelchair and has coped with several road conditions. A stability control system calculates the proper moments on th...

متن کاملRisk Analysis of Stationary Rail Cars Containing Hazardous Materials; A Case Study
The purpose of this study is to analyze the risks associated with stationary rail cars carrying hazardous materials (Hazmat) in railway stations. This study considers risk analysis of the Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) storage cars queued in Sarakhs Railway Station in Iran. The congestion of LPG cars at station may lead to some incidents which can endanger people and cause damages to the propert...
